چکیده

The present research examines how the match between encoding and recall contexts influences recall performance. Memory research has shown that recall performance can be impaired when a subset of the studied stimuli is presented at recall (the part-set cuing effect) or when the recall process is carried out in a collaborative way (collaborative inhibition effect). In 4 experiments we manipulated the degree of match between item organization at encoding and at retrieval, either by manipulating: the organization of part-set cues (exp. 1); the organization of the information provided at encoding to participants of the same collaborative recall sessions (exp. 2); or the nature of the encoding conditions (collaborative vs. non-collaborative; exp. 3 and 4). Results stress the parallel between both effects showing that mismatching encoding organization cues provided at test (by the experimenter or by other collaborative group members), impair recall considerably when compared to no cues or matching encoding organization cues. We present a theoretical account for the reported result pattern the principle of associative

A recurrent connectionist model of person impression formation.

Major findings in impression formation are reviewed and modeled from a connectionist perspective. The findings are in the areas of primacy and recency in impression formation, asymmetric diagnosticity of ability- and morality-related traits, increased recall for trait-inconsistent information, assimilation and contrast in priming, and discounting of trait inferences by situational information. ...

Taking a closer look: On the operation of nonconscious impression formation.

In this article we analyzed the information processing that underlies nonconscious impression formation. In the first experiment, the nonconscious activation of the impression formation goal led to a faster analysis of the trait implications of behaviors, compared with a control group. In Experiment 2, participants who were nonconsciously primed with an impression formation goal were more likel...

Memory for Serial Order in Social Cognition: Does Order Matter When We Are Forming Impressions About Strangers?

The systematic study of memory for serial order has yet to find its niche in social cognition. According to the person memory literature, the organizational process underlying impression formation results in a network of associative links between information nodes (behaviors and traits) representing the target. This representation should facilitate the recall of source information and impair th...
